Pierres Eindrücke: "From Vire to Jonesboro"

"What could a Frenchman from Normandy do in Arkansas ?

Since it’s my actual life, let me tell you. When I arrived, thanks to the University I got to know many students (especially some Germans) so I never suffered from loneliness and wasn’t too much home sick since I am having some fun in here too.
As we can see from the pictures of the clock towers of my origin town and of Jonesboro, things are different here but not so much. I am from a small town so I don’t mind being quiet: reading and doing some sport is perfect for me. Obviously things would be different if I was keen on clubbing and shopping because clearly Arkansas isn’t the best place to do that.
This journey to the US is interesting because what makes it special isn’t some huge differences but a multitude of small ones: their traffic lights are on the other side of the road, they love football but soccer is mostly for women, their food is mainly hamburgers and sodas … The mentalities are different too. People always ask you, how you are doing but clearly a pessimist answer isn’t an option ... everybody is always “grrreat!”. Also “Support our Troops” is very common at the backs of the cars (even Robert has one, even if I am fighting hard for him to put it off).
These differences are of course what I am here for, because I want to know about the American culture and hopefully the knowledge about different countries will make me a better Frenchman … and even more appreciate our wine and bread!"
